Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Implants
There are various reasons to replace a missing tooth (or teeth). Sometimes you’ll have an accident and the tooth will dislodge, and sometimes you may have health issues which lead to tooth loss. No matter the cause, dental implants are an effective, natural looking solution when missing teeth are impacting your self-confidence and daily life.
Below are the answers to some common questions we get asked by people who are curious about their teeth and wondering if dental implant services are the best way forward.
Common Risks of Dental Implants
As with any kind of dental procedure, there are a couple of risks associated with dental implants – but these are inherently minor and we do take great care to discuss these with you in more detail in person.
Nerve damageIf you are getting a dental implant in your lower jaw, there are some cases in which nerve damage can occur. In most cases, nerve damage is very rare, and minor if at all. If there is any nerve damage, your dentist will remove the implant and allow the area to heal, after which time they can repeat the dental implant treatment.
PainSome minor swelling and pain will be present at the site of the implant for a couple of days following the surgery, but this will subside in time. In the meantime, your dentist will prescribe you appropriate pain relief to ensure you are not in discomfort.
We will never leave you in pain or perform dental surgery without due care and consideration for your needs.
Dental Implants Brisbane
At Sunnybank Hills Family Dental, we take great care to make sure everything goes smoothly and that you have the best chance to join the high percentage of successful cases for surgical dental implants.
When you arrive for your implant appointment, you will notice a few changes to how we normally do things! The dental surgery will be set up as an implant surgical room; you will see sterile drapes and tubing covers placed on benches and equipment. Dr Nick Baveas and his dental assistant will be clothed in sterile gowns and bouffant caps (hair coverings) etc. You will also have a bouffant cap and a sterile drape placed over you.
Your dental assistant will prepare you for the treatment, and Dr Nick Baveas will discuss the process with you one last time – answering any further questions or concerns you may have.
Dental implants are considered a permanent solution for missing teeth, however, like natural teeth, they can fail. Good oral hygiene at home and regular dental check-up and cleans will help ensure the longevity of your implant.

- Do I have to replace a missing tooth? If you’re considering leaving a space where a tooth once was, you first need to be aware of the risk of not getting your tooth replaced.
Bone loss – when a tooth is removed, the bone that supported it shrinks over time. This process is called “resorption” and can lead to several different issues, from cosmetic concerns to more serious issues affecting other teeth.
Drifting – the loss of one or two teeth can lead to drifting or tilting of the neighbouring teeth. The opposing tooth may also drift further into the mouth. This can cause multiple issues, one being problems with function such as chewing difficulties.
Your dentist will be able to discuss these potential problems in more detail with you.
